About Deryn Relph
Deryn graduated from Winchester School of Art in 2010 having specialised in Knitted Textile Design. Merging this with a lifetime of textile related skills & experience Deryn set up her own business designing & making a range of knitted interior items including innovative lampshades & upcycled furniture pieces. Alongside her own collections Deryn designs on a freelance basis. She also runs workshops & welcomes commissions for individual clients or commercial projects.
Textiles and related crafts have always been an important part of deryn’s life – from my first attempts to knit, making my wedding dress, upholstering my sofa to graduating with First Class BA(Hons) in Textiles, Fashion & Fibre.
Deryn now works as a freelance textile designer and designer-maker, working with predominantly knitted textiles for interiors & lifestyle.
Influenced by her own experiences, having learned skills from her grandmothers and mother, Deryn identifies with their ‘make do and mend’ ethos as a sustainable design strategy. She likes to take traditional techniques or ideas and make them contemporary, often by use of colour or imaginative application.
Deryn’s bold use of colour seeks to evoke a nostalgic happiness, based on her 1960’s-1970s childhood and a rainbow colour palette. In addition Deryn’s comprehensive range of textile skills & experience give her real insight into materials allowing her to exploit their unique properties innovatively
Inspiration generally comes from an interest in natural and scientific structures, such as plants, seeds and cells but has a nostalgic element too.
