Today’s activity, whilst inspired by VE Day, can of course be used all year round whenever you feel someone needs celebrating and is worthy of an award!! It was inspired by my lovely friend Georgina, who used to make these sweet little awards years ago… Thanks for the inspiration Georgina and I hope it has inspired you to have a go…
What you’ll need:
We’ve included links to all the materials needed in case you don’t have them at home and need to purchase some. Please note – by making a purchase through the links below, Making Space will receive a small commission, so you will be helping to raise funds for us as well!
*Typewriter (if you have none but not needed)
*Selection of round objects
To begin with you need to decide who will be the lucky recipient of your award… Is your Mum the ‘Best Mum Ever’? Do you have a ‘Lovely Neighbour’? Has someone been ‘Super Helpful’ or deserving of a ‘Best Washer Up’ Award…? Once you’ve chose who you’re making the Award for… you have to make the ‘award’ part of it….
I used my typewriter and some lovely kraft brown paper, but you could hand draw these, you could use a computer and print them out, or use a stencil… Totally up to you… Try and keep it small though as this is the centre of your award and it will get bigger… Try for no bigger then an inch!
Once you’ve got that ready to go trace round one of your smaller round objects with a pencil round the words and cut out using paper scissors.
The you can make the award look really special… Choose your felt colours (I was inspired by The Union Jack flag as it’s VE Day tomorrow, but this is totally up to you!) Choose a circular object just a little bigger then the first circle. (p.s., if you’ve not got access to felt, you can use coloured card… would work just as well!!)
Use a pen to trace round it onto the felt (start in the corner so you don’t waste fabric) then cut it out using fabric scissors… Now you can choose to keep it circular or snip out triangles round the edge to make rosette style stars… Repeat this process 2 or 3 times, getting bigger each time till you’ve created a beautiful award!
Now you need to stick it all together… I used double-sided tape but you can use a glue gun, fabric glue, probably even PVA… you could of course also stitch them together!
Once all secure you need to add some ribbons to the bottom to make it super fancy! My examples show a few different options, including mixing ribbon and felt, folding in the middle and using 2 layers. I again used double-sided tape (watch the video) but again… use what works for you.
Turn it over and admire your award!! Final touch is to add a safety pin to the back so it can be worn!
I used a short length of ribbon, attached a length of double sided tape and then trapped the back side of a safety pin between the ribbon and the felt (again… watch the video to see me do this)
And there you go… Award your handmade Award to the recipient and watch them smile and wear it with pride… Great for handing out ahead of VE Day tomorrow if like us you’re having an ‘at home street party’!
I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and have a go… If you do PLEASE share your creations with us… I’d LOVE to see what you’ve been making!
