Today I have a really simple, fun and colourful crafty activity for you to try at home… Making Tassel Keyrings!
What you’ll need:
We’ve included links to all the materials needed in case you don’t have them at home and need to purchase some. Please note – by making a purchase through the links below, Making Space will receive a small commission, so you will be helping to raise funds for us as well!
Activity:
To begin with choose what colour wool you want and what size you want to make… If you want a larger keyring, use the long length of A6, if you want a smaller one, use the shorter length.
Place the end of the wool at the bottom of the card and place your thumb on top then wrap around the card in a circular motion. once you’ve done a few loops you can move your thumb. Keep the wool taut but don’t pull too tight… the card might curl up a little, don’t worry about that but try and keep it straight.
Once you are happy with how full it is (remember you are only seeing half of the full thickness stop and trim off the bottom.
Then get a bit more wool (about 30/40cm and loop it through the top incorporating a keyring loop. Do about 4 loops to ensure it’s secure and then pull tight and knot off! (watch the video if this instruction isn’t clear)
Once the keyring is in place slide the whole thing off the card. You can then pull the wool tight (keyring hoop in one hand, scissors in the other and cut so you now have loose ends.
You now need to add the ‘neck’ of the tassel… Choose your wool colour (the sale or complimentary) and cut another 30/40cm length. Use one hand to create a bulbous bit closest to the keyring hoop and then start binding round the ‘neck’. Again this is easier to demonstrate then explain so do watch the video.
Once you’re happy with the thickness do a triple knot and cut off the excess, then all you need to do is trim the bottom of the tassel and viola one finished tassel keyring!!
These would also work great as a bag charm / pendant or just a decoration! Have fun, experiment with different colours and why not gift a few to friends / family! If you do have a go, don’t forget to send us a photo of the result! We’d love to see your creations!
