When Cabrini Roy arrived at Making Space in 2012 for her 2-week work experience placement, having her own studio and her work at London Fashion Week was the stuff of dreams! Now that dream is a reality and we’d like to use this blog post as a way of welcoming our newest studio and shining a spotlight on what has been an eventful first few months as a Making Space studio tenant!
We asked Cabrini if she can remember what inspired her to chose Making Space for her work experience placement a seven years ago:
“I was looking for a fun, creative and inspiring place to do my work experience, somewhere I could learn and expand my knowledge. I picked Making Space because of the atmosphere, it had a creative vibe that I adored and I knew I wanted to learn from this community. The makers really inspired me, I loved the passion they had for their work, how hard-working each maker was, the amount of effort they gave to their work and how each individual tenant had their own talents and stories to tell. I still remember those makers and they inspire me day-by-day. I think it’s so important to be inspired at a young age because those are the memories that will drive you to keep on going, to keep on chasing that dream. And that’s exactly what Making Space did for me.”
Inspired by her time at Making Space, after school Cabrini went on to study at Highbury College before enrolling on an art foundation course at University for the Creative Arts, where she received a Distinction foundation diploma. Last year Cabrini graduated from the London College of Fashion with an honours degree in BA Fashion Design Technology: Womenswear.
And that it seems is just the beginning for this talented young designer as earlier this year she was contacted by Fashion’s Finest to showcase with them during London Fashion Week, an incredible achievement for a recent graduate and such a young designer. Cabrini adds “The difference Making Space has made to my business is endless, I now have a professional place to work, design and get creative in that I feel at home in. I am so grateful for the opportunity that Making Space has given me, for letting me grow my business in one of their studios and letting me be a part of their community. I hope others are inspired to know that your dreams and goals are worth investing in, that from the passion and talent you have, as long as you pursue it, you’ll find happiness because you are doing what you love! To never give up because you are capable.”
Cabrini elaborates and tells us more about the brand she built at University. “CABRINI ROY represents a new age of luxury ready to wear fashion, I create innovative bold silhouettes whilst staying true to a minimal style. I like to explore ways to visually represent my story whether that be drawing inspiration from my childhood to create contemporary streetwear, or taking influence from my filipino culture. The garments I create have a distinct style yet remain comfortable enough to be worn everyday. Each design includes a touch of me, I want to empower women through my pieces, with an emphasis on setting your own trends with no boundaries on the numerous amounts of ways to style each essential piece.”
Cabrini is currently working with the top stylists in the Philippines with her garments being worn by numerous Filipino celebrities such as Nadine Lustre, Loisa Andalio, Julie Anne Jose, Kyline Alcantara and many more. Recently, Cabrini was also hand picked by British Vogue to be part of their Designer Profile Campaign, featuring on British Vogue October Issue and Vogue Retail (vogue.co.uk/retail).
Since moving into her studio in the Summer Cabrini has been putting in the hours adding the finishing touches to her first collection post graduation which debuted on the catwalk of LFW in September! We’re thrilled to be able to share some photos with you of Cabrini’s outfits being modelled during her show and also some images from her lookbook!
From Cabrini’s Press Release we share some details about the inspiration behind her collection ‘Wardrobe ng Modern Maria Clara’.
“Deeply rooted from Cabrini’s own cross culture she has re-defined NEUTRAL. At the heart of the collection is a core understanding of a colour palette to compliment any skin colour. Soft hues are mimicked through the use of organza and silk creating the perfect representation of a warm summers evening all then contrasted with sharp tailoring.
Cabrini Roy London ENTWINES into every garment a knowledge of the female form to create a collection that applauses all body types. Her collection blends her love for a selection of pinnacle fashion references including power dressing, soft silhouettes and her culture. Taking inspiration from her Filipino heritage with the idea of a modern Filipiniana Maria Clara with a combined twist of soft tailoring and feminine touch. The Designer created a settling in her imagination of a modern Maria Clara living and working in the city wearing chic, trendy and eye catching clothes but still keeping the silhouettes of a traditional Filipiniana in her wardrobe. Her inspiration is stitched into every garment with an eye for detail that is second to none.
THE IDEA BEHIND EVERY GARMENT – Cabrini Roy represents her own life story through the pieces in her collection, as the garments are also inspired by her childhood photos. The designer has always desired her clothes to be a representation of her life, her identity and her style.
