Making Space has teamed up with environmental organisation Planet Aware to launch a one year project entitled Textile Transformation.
With generous support from Hampshire County Council, this exciting new partnership will work with and across the local community to share skills and help people build a better understanding of the environmental and social impact of the fashion industry. The project will help reduce the amount of clothes being thrown away by helping people learn creative skills to mend, up-cycle and make better use of clothing – keeping it in use for longer.
Over the last two decades clothing production has doubled – yet we are wearing each item of clothing for a shorter amount of time. With a third of the items in the average wardrobe remaining unworn for over a year and three-quarters of clothing ending up in landfill the impact of the textile and fashion industry is massively unsustainable.
Textile Transformation will run from November 2019 to November 2020 starting with three drop-in sessions taking place at schools and Christmas fairs. With your feedback at these events we will be finalising the 2020 programme in early January. Please check back for the latest updates!
This project is being supported through Hampshire County Council’s Household Waste Minimisation Fund.
Textile Transformation will include:
3 pre-Christmas make and take sessions
8 short creative workshops
4 one-day creative workshops
2 larger community events
