I don’t know about you but as soon as the clocks go back as the nights are dark I can’t think of anything better to do with my evenings then to curl up on the sofa, with a blanket and indulge in a little me time. Autumn is when craft projects come out from hiding and my creativity spikes… I blame it on the sunshine… when it’s out, I feel like I should be too! Walks on the beach and alfresco dinners are the done thing, but come Autumn and the thought of heading out into the cold to socialise just doenst seem so appealing.
I’m sure I’m not the only one that feels this way and it’s part of the reason we’ve programmed in such an inspiring Autumn/Winter season of Adult Saturday Classes this year. Knowing that creatives always like to try their hand at something new, these workshops are great for both beginners and experienced makers wanting to add another skill to their set!
Also, if you’re anything like me, you love nothing more then gifting a homemade present or making decorations yourself so with that in mind too, let me tell you about our upcoming workshops as they are perfect for inspiring your creative me time and the outcomes will be perfect in the run up to the most festive time of year!
First up is the insanely talented Nora Fok. Nora seems to possess the gift of utterly transforming some plain Nylon thread into the most awe-inspiring 3-Dimensional wearable art pieces you can imagine!
During our workshop ‘Jewellery Making with Nylon Monofilament’, Nora will teach students the same basic skills she uses in her own work. Participants will then get the opportunity to explore different skills on mini projects and learn from a true master of her craft!
If you’re interested and want to have a go, take a look online and book a place today. This workshop is 100% perfect for anyone who loves jewellery and wants to incorporate another dimension into their work, or someone who just in intrigued by the opportunity to learn from a highly skilled and talented maker!
The next artist is IOW textile queen Lindsay Taylor. I have followed Lindsay’s’ work for a few years, now ever since I saw her book ‘Embroidered Art’, Lindsay, like Nora, takes a simple technique, but turns it on its head and magnifies it 100%! Using simple machine embroidery Lindsay creates 3-dimensional pieces of embroidered art. Her pieces, which are largely inspired by flora and fauna surrounding her studio and home, are a wonder to behold and again she’s happy to share some of her know-how on this upcoming workshop.
The Machine Embroidery workshop is booked in on the same day as Nora’s – Saturday 19 November from 10am-3pm. During the workshop those attending will get a chance to explore machine embroidery using dissolvable fabric. Using Christmas as inspiration, pieces made will be perfect for decorations and gifts, and I am willing to bet everyone who comes will leave feeling inspired and eager to try more at home. If you’d like to find out more check out the Making Space website where you can book a place and start collecting inspiration.
The last workshop & artist I want to share with you is one of our newest associate makers Kathryn Green. Kathryn designs and creates some most gorgeous shibori dyed silk scarves. Watching Kathryn experiment with different techniques and colours at Making Space has been fascinating and when she told me she also knows the traditional art of Japanese book binding I encouraged her to run a course in it.
I adore books and journals and I’m sure I’m not the only one! I have rather clumsily made handmade books in the past but to learn how to properly do it would be wonderful.
Booked in for the end of November/beginning of December (26/11 & 3/12) this workshop is perfect for Christmas present creating! (It also allows you enough time to go home and make the most of those winter evenings so you’ll be able to gift all your nearest and dearest hand made books come the 25th!) You can secure your place online today.
So there you have it… My Autumnal offerings on how to inspire your cosy creative evenings in! We will be taking bookings for these classes over the next couple of weeks so please book asap if you’d like to come on any of them! Please share and spread the word too! If you can think of someone you’d like would be interested please send them our way! Happy Autumn!
