Playing With Colour – A Creative Masterclass with Kas Williams

October 1 09:30 - October 2 16:30

A weekend workshop aimed at practising artists who are open to an experimental way of making with a loose approach to their work. With the emphasis on enjoyment and play you’ll be working in an expressive way with the layering of colour, marks and shapes that allows for your work to develop organically offering its own surprises along the way.

Day 1.

Kas will create an exuberant still life as inspiration for you to respond to and develop your work in a loose and immediate way through drawing, painting and mark making.

Day 2.
You will build on the experience of Day 1 to develop your work through the medium of heat transfer. Using specialist transfer dyes and papers you’ll continue to experiment developing your style to create your own unique framed mini-abstract on taffeta to take home with you.

All materials and tools are provided. Students are encouraged to bring any favourite brushes and tools they have for mark making – it’s always good to have something familiar to work with when you’re learning!

Tutor: Kas Williams MA. Artist, Designer and Maker.
Kas Williams is an artist, designer and maker with a profound love of colour. Describing herself as ‘at heart an explorer’ she has a playful and experimental approach to her work mixing materials with multiple techniques to create a visual vocabulary expressed in abstract works. Originally trained in the craft of textile printing her practice now embraces a wide spectrum of printing techniques, paper sculpture, digital design and photography.

Kas graduated with a Masters Distinction in Textiles from the University for the Creative Arts and has since exhibited widely both in the UK and Internationally. She works from her studio on the south coast creating limited editions and one-off pieces to commission as well as occasional ranges of furnishings and wearables under the label ‘Collectables’

Student feedback
Kas’s class was like a door opening into a new experimental world for me as I work as a textile artist but in a tightly controlled way and find it hard to let go and let flow! Her clear explanations and demonstrations were so inspiring and enabling”

“Great class, well structured but relaxed and ‘nothing is wrong’ ethos. It’s always nice to leave with a finished piece and lots of ideas to carry forward”

“Such an enjoyable weekend with Kas as our kind guide and teacher. She encouraged us to be free in our approach, looking freshly for happenstance. We experimented with fixing paint onto fabric through heat transfer techniques and everyone created gorgeous abstract layers of colour and shape on the material – whatever their level of artistic experience. Great fun and very liberating.”
