Making Space is excited to announce that we’ve secured a grant from Arts Council England to pilot a new education project with four schools in the local area. The project will involve thirty pupils and a teacher from each school, and four professional makers.
The project will offer pupils a chance to develop their skills in craft and making and also support teachers to use skills in the classroom (Key Stage 1 & 2) We want to work with teachers to make connections between thinking, designing and making and other areas of the curriculum.
Making Space believes that craft is about learning through doing. Allowing a child creative freedom and the opportunity to make, not only strengthens their creative skills, personal wellbeing and social development, but can also have a positive impact on their STEM (Science, Technology, English, Maths) knowledge and understanding.
Learning Through Craft will inspire teachers to use and share new knowledge and skills in the classroom. The pilot will explore what tools and approaches teachers and makers need to use to make craft of value and relevant to pupils, and how they learn.
Our overall ambition is to devise new ways of teaching craft and art with methods to evaluate learning outcomes. We will use the findings and evaluation to improve the model and bid for further funding over 2-3 years to roll out the opportunity to other schools.
Making Space is now doing a call out to appoint 4 makers and an External Evaluator.
Please read the short job briefs below and click on the link if you’d like to download further information.
