Being a freelance creative is brilliant but it can also be quite isolating and so we hope these bi-monthly sessions will become a regular opportunity to get out to the studio and socialise with other likeminded creatives.
The sessions will take place on Monday evenings from 6-8pm. The sessions will be free to attend but like our MNL’s we will ask makers to confirm they’re coming using eventbrite. This allows us to confirm attendance numbers and keep track of those attending.
The upcoming 2019 dates are as follows:
18 March, 20 May, 22 July, 23 September, 18 November 2019
The structure of the sessions will evolve and change as those attending can help shape and mould them to what they want/need.
It might be a general networking / get to know one another session. We may look at bringing along professionals to lead talks or discussions, they may be creative and hands on. Maker Mondays will also provide makers the opportunity to feed into Making Space going forth, sharing your needs and thoughts on what we’re doing and how we can evolve together, with our space being best use for you/other makers!
For the March Maker Monday on March 18, we are introducing Skills Share. These short 30 minute segments will be led by a professional maker who will share skills or a process with you that you may be able to use in your own practice.
For the first session, we have invited along Richard Walker, who is a studio tenant at Making Space and a master gilder. Gilding is the process of applying thin sheets of gold leaf to various surfaces using an adhesive. Richard has been gilding for nearly 20 years and has a wealth of knowledge in this historic craft form, working directly with artists, photographers, furniture designers and many other crafts.
An overview of the different gilding processes will be explained and Richard will have a variety of examples on hand to demonstrate how it can be used with different mediums. This may well lead to opening up ideas and allow the opportunity to discuss how you may be able to incorporate gold into your own work & practice.
Gilding isn’t really a discipline that can be trialled in such a short session due to the time needed to prepare the surfaces, but if anyone would like to purchase a sheet of golf leaf to experiment with, then these can be purchased from Richard for just £1.50 a sheet.
If you feel particularly inspired, and would like to learn more, you can visit Richard’s website – http://somethinggold.com or book in a session directly with Richard to learn how to professionally include it within your own practice. The talk will take about 20 minutes, leaving 10 mins for some Q&A’s.
We will also be planning some other simple activities and there will be a chance to network with other makers attending. Simple drinks and nibbles provided but please feel free to contribute.
Free parking is available in the car park behind Making Space after 6pm. You can book your free place on the March Maker Monday by clicking here. Please feel free to share with other makers and invite anyone else you think might be interested.
