I did my work experience at Making Space and I really enjoyed everyday of it because I always had lots of interesting jobs to do and everyone was so lovely! I have definitely learnt some new skills, which I will use in the future, and what the world of work is really like. I enjoyed working with new people and experiencing a different environment to school.
Making space was a lovely place to do my work experience and I’m glad I chose it as I was never once bored and I enjoyed coming in. I liked meeting and speaking to new people, doing jobs I would never usually do and I always felt welcomed, as everyone was really friendly.
Here is a quick overview of some of the things that I got up to!
I prepared for an exhibition by cutting out photos and laminating.
I walked around town with Kate giving out summer school posters to local businesses.
I worked on the computer doing some odd jobs.
I helped set up for a class that was going on.
I helped the kids from Glenwood school on their skills share arts award by taking photos, and writing down for them inside their booklets.
I went through some of the files to see if them were still in date.
I made a card game by printing out lots of art and non-art related photos, cutting them out and laminating them ready for summer school.
I took down the previous exhibition.
Then I shredded papers and did some odd jobs.
Thursday- (evening shift)
I put some posters up on the wall advertising young designers and Pete ceramics class then I cut out some hand outs of them.
I finished going through the files checking if they were in date.
I researched some Cambodian style masks and printed out some templates.
I made some example masks ready for a class in august.
I took some photos of the jewellery class that was going on.
I wrote up this blog post!
Printed out pictures of Pete and Richard and cut them out ready for summer school.
I went in a meeting and took down notes and wrote them up on the computer.
Finished the masks and sorted out the jewellery boxes.
Summary from Ami.
It was great having Mia here last week. She was very hard working and got on with the variety of jobs we asked her to do without complaint and with a smile on her face.
As with all our work experience young people we try and ensure they get a varied and fun insight into what the world of work is really like. As most of the staff are part time we divide up the week so who ever is in can work with the student on various jobs. This means that they get to experience a much broader scope of jobs then if they were just working with one member of staff.
Mia especially shone when she was asked to help out with the Glenwood Showcase. Mia was part of the audience on the groups ‘Skills Share’ and was taught new craft skills including screen printing, ceramic and jewellery. She even got a practical lesson in texturing metal from Leon. She asked intelligent questions and was supportive of the various needs in the group. Once the skills share was over Mia proved invaluable again when she worked 121 with one of the group in reflection on writing up.
In addition to this Mia also helped us out immensely in the office. She provided me with a huge amount of marketing support and made some fantastic mask samples for an upcoming event.
A big Thank you to Mia for all your hard work and we look forward to next July and the young people who will be joining us then! If you’d like to find out more please visit the Get Involved page of the website.
