October Maker Networking Lunch – Liam Davis
We host Maker Networking Lunches 6 times a year. These sessions are exclusively for other makers (of all levels & disciplines) and involve a presentation, demonstration or talk from a maker or industry professional followed by an informal networking lunch. You can find out more about the sessions by clicking here.
Our October talk is taking place on Tuesday 23 October from 11am-1pm and we have invited along Liam Anthony Davis to lead the session.
Liam is one of our newer studio tenants and is a recent graduate from Southampton Solent University. Following his degree in Fashion Design he applied for and moved into his studio at Making Space earlier this year.
Since moving into his own studio Liam is embarking on a capsule collection, his first since graduation. The range is based on a concept Liam has worked on before but not had the time or space to fully develop. It will include various high-end fashion garments, mixing casual with formal as well as a range of scarves.
Liam’s work is unique is that in addition to constructing the garments, he also designs the prints used for the fabric. Liam uses digital photography and computer software to create his prints. His new collection entitled Ice Bound uses distorted images Liam created by freezing fresh flowers in water and then manipulating the images.
During the Maker Networking Lunch, Liam will have a selection of the new prints that he’s produced over the past few months on show and will also demonstrate the techniques he uses. For those feeling inspired, Liam will also share information on his sources for digital printing and the benefits to using such sources.
Liam will discuss his business ideas around selling his scarves to fund other desires for his brand, and how this gives people an accessible product.
He’ll also share his thoughts on how having a studio at Making Space has helped give him the power to shape his business and what difference it’s made to him. This talk will be inspirational and informative and an insight into a local designer embarking into a new career path and business plan.
Liam’s talk will take place from 11-12noon and then everyone is invited to stay on for lunch from 12noon-1pm. The lunch is a communal affair, with everyone bringing a dish to share and enjoy over further discussion. Making Space is happy to provide tea, coffee and other soft drinks.
The MNLs provide local makers an opportunity to meet other makers in the area, seek advice, chat through ideas, share knowledge and just get out of the studio for an afternoon of good food and creative inspiration.
