Power Of Tin
On 18 January 2018, Making Space partnered with Rowans Hospice to host ‘The Power of Tin’ – a fundraising exhibition and auction event. The event was a happy finale to our 10th year celebrations here in Leigh Park and marked our growing relationship with Rowans Hospice.
The auction was themed around the material ‘Tin’, which traditionally is associated with 10th anniversary celebrations. We were thrilled to receive so many unique, high-quality and surprising responses to the theme.
With well-established & renowned artists generously submitting work; Victoria Brown, My Dog Sighs, Cas Holmes and Syann Van Nifrik to name a few, we were confident an amazing evening would follow and lots of money would be raised for charity.
In total we had 28 lots that can be seen in the gallery below. These were posted online two weeks prior to the event to give everyone the opportunity to place online bids and with help from The News and That’s Solent TV Company we were able to create a buzz around the event.

A preview event attended by HRH Princess Royal and other specially invited guests took place earlier in the day and on the evening of the auction 77 people joined in the fun. A special catalogue enabled guests the opportunity to find out more about the donated lots. The inspiration behind the piece and the creator was revealed, which had, until that moment remained a mystery.
At 7pm people excitedly took their seats and with professional TV auctioneer Susan Orringe at the helm, the evening was a resounding success.
Over 30 individuals joined in and bided on work, this included online bids and those placed earlier in the day. Susan ensured lots of laughter, healthy rivalry and the upmost generosity from those present. We received very positive feedback from those in attendance, people saying how much they enjoyed seeing the exhibition, the variety and professionalism on display and the auction event.
In addition to the 27 tin themed pieces we also had ‘The Tenth Tin’. Closely associated makers, including past and present tenants, donated work to contribute to a prize tin! We were overwhelmed by the generosity and impressive pieces, that following suggestion from Susan Orringe, were auctioned off as individual lots to raise the most amount of money possible. Original artworks, one-of-a-kind pieces of jewellery, beautiful textiles and 121 tutoring experiences made up the tenth tin and caused some excited and competitive bidding on the night!

The event was a sell-out success with every single piece of donated artwork selling. Once the final totals had been made, all of the donated artwork helped to raise over £2400 to Rowans and Making Space!
We are thrilled that the event was such a success, not only in raising the profile of craft and making but also demonstrating the value of both charities’ work within the community.

We’d like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who made the event such a success:
Firstly a huge thank you to all the makers who submitted and created work for the auction. Your generosity and skill is what made the event such a success. Without the well-crafted, beautiful and highly coveted submissions we wouldn’t have had anything to auction off.
Secondly we’d like to thank Susan Orringe who generously offered her time to this event as our auctioneer for free. Susan’s extensive experience in the Arts and Antiques world, including working as a broadcaster for the BBC, on such programmes as Flog it and Bargain Hunt, meant the event ran smoothly. Without her advice and suggestions the evening wouldn’t have been the well-oiled and professional event that it was!
Finally a huge thank you to everyone else; those that came to see the auction, those who helped spread the word, shared posts online, gave us press coverage, put coins in donation pots and bided! You all played your part and helped us raise a huge amount of money for both charities.
A huge Thank you to Paul Gonella from Strong Island media for this Phone Film.
