Reach Out Summer School 2016
With the school holidays very quickly creeping up on us, sometimes it’s difficult to know what to do with your children to fill the gaps of the big summer break.
Here at Making Space, as well as our Summer School, we run a “Reach Out” Summer School specifically offering children with additional needs the opportunity to enjoy exciting craft workshops, learn new skills and make new friends!
The Reach Out programme, funded by short breaks, runs throughout the year including this summer the 15th, 17th and 19th August.
The daily layout of the workshops can vary to two separate morning and afternoon sessions to one all-day workshop with the same artist. This year, we have a bit of a variety!
Starting the week off on 15th August, we have scheduled in two fun workshops for you to enjoy with the option to do both or just the one.
From 10am to 12noon, you will have the opportunity to learn how to TIE DYE! with the lovely Ami Lowman. You will be looking at the process and techniques used to create tie-dye patterns and using these skills, dye your own t-shirts to take home with you!
Ami will provide the T-shirts for all those attending as long as your booking is made far in advance. (If you book very last minute, you may need to bring your own blank t-shirt with you to dye.)
You will learn how to create different Tie Dye patterns using elastic bands as well as how to prepare and mix the dyes and dye your t-shirt!
For the afternoon session from 1pm-3pm, you will then have the opportunity to create your own cushion covers! Ami will teach and assist you in designing and making your own cushion cover for your bedroom. You will learn how to create fabric collages, experiment with stitch and use a sewing machine to sew it all up!
For the Monday, each workshop is £7.50 and if you’d like to stay for the whole day, please bring with you some lunch, as we’ll be taking a break from 12noon-1pm!
On the 17th August, we will be running a whole day workshop with Paul Gonella from Strong Island Media! This will be a film workshop where you will have the chance to work with Paul to design your own storyboard and script, and then act, direct and film your own short film before learning a little about post editing! How exciting!
Finally, on the 19th August, we shall be ending this year’s Reach Out Summer School with another whole day workshop with Carpenter Maxwell Hyde! For this workshop, you will have the chance to design and create MINECRAFT inspired woodwork! (A workshop that has been incredibly popular this year!)
You will work with Maxwell to learn how to make your own moveable wooden Minecraft Figure using professional woodwork tools as well as craft paint to decorate your figures afterwards! Adding detail with paint, you will be able to give your figure facial features, hair and clothing of your choice!
Both day workshops cost an affordable £14.50 per child but don’t forget to bring a packed lunch with you, as we will also be having a break to chill and eat from 12noon-1pm.
For each individual workshop, whether a half session or full day, we take up to a maximum of ten participants.
As a parent, you are more than welcome to stay and enjoy the session with your child but likewise, if you’re happy to, we will have trained workshop assistants as well as the workshop lead artist to accompany and look after all participants at all times to give you a little time off too!
Every single one of our workshop artists are experienced in leading children’s workshops and fully enjoy what they do!
So, if you’re now excited to join in the fun and would like to book onto one of our Reach Out workshops, you can do so by booking online through our website and paying through PayPal. Or you can also book and pay over the telephone by card or by popping by and paying card, cash or cheque!
