Sophie: Guest Blog Post – “My Work Experience at Making Space”
Over the two weeks of my work experience at Making Space I have attended meetings, written up notes, completed some admin tasks and created examples of work for an upcoming kids workshop.
I have very much enjoyed my time here and I’m so glad that I chose Making Space for my two weeks work experience. I learnt how to use Excel (something that they don’t teach us to do at my school) I also learnt how to confidently introduce myself and welcome people that I didn’t know and I was able to develop my listening and note taking skills by going to meetings with Lynne.
I chose to come to Making Space because I take part in their Young Designers course and have been for several years now. The building is close to home and I felt comfortable here as the staff and tenants are so welcoming which made my two weeks so much easier.
Strangely enough, I was never once worried, concerned or nervous about being in a different environment with different tasks to do for two weeks rather than being in school, where I know most people, where I’m going and what I should be doing. But it was still an interesting and eye-opening experience that allowed me to be part of what goes on that we don’t normally see.
Unexpectedly, one afternoon just before I left to go home Lynne and I got talking about the Arts Award and I am now on my way to achieving my Bronze Award. If I hadn’t come here I wouldn’t have even thought about doing an Arts Award. I also got to sit in on the Makers Networking Lunch where Lisa Mann spoke about retail within the creative industry. Not only was this information valuable as I hope to one day work within the arts but even just listening to the stories and current projects of the makers, I was able to understand all the work that goes into what they do to be successful in their field.
I want to thank everyone at Making Space for making me feel welcome and for helping me out these past 2 weeks, it’s been a lot of fun and I have learnt so much from you all.
