Making Space has teamed up with environmental organisation Planet Aware to launch a one year project entitled Textile Transformation.

With generous support from Hampshire County Council, this exciting new partnership will work with and across the local community to share skills and help people build a better understanding of the environmental and social impact of the fashion industry. The project will help reduce the amount of clothes being thrown away by helping people learn creative skills to mend, up-cycle and make better use of clothing – keeping it in use for longer.

Over the last two decades clothing production has doubled – yet we are wearing each item of clothing for a shorter amount of time. With a third of the items in the average wardrobe remaining unworn for over a year and three-quarters of clothing ending up in landfill the impact of the textile and fashion industry is massively unsustainable.

Textile Transformation will run from November 2019 to November 2020 starting with three drop-in sessions that took place at schools and Christmas fairs in Nov/Dec 2019. Feedback from these events was used inform future workshops and the 2020 programme. Please check out the workshops below which we will be adding more to very soon!

2020 workshops

Our Textile Transformation workshops share creative and clever ways of upcycling, repurposing and repairing the things we already have. Sign up to one of our workshops and take the first step to your own textile transformation! We will be reusing and recycling materials for all our workshops as much as possible – cutting costs and stopping waste going to landfill sites!

Online Tutorials

In light of the current situation you may have noticed we are busy creating some online content with creative activity suggestions that you can try at home. A few of these sessions will compliment the ideas and ethos of our Textile Transformation project and so we will be sharing links to those activities online here. Just click on the links below to be taken to the detailed blog post where you’ll find a materials checklist, a step by step description and a video tutorial. If you have a go and make anything inspired by the activities then please share the finished results with us! Happy Crafting!
