Write About Craft | Making Space Project in partnership with Catharine Russell
Write About Craft took place in October / November 2019 and aimed to develop artists’ skills in writing about their practice. Specifically, the course focussed on how the artist can reveal their own story of making so that it is understood by a range of different audiences. This matters, because artists have to present their own work on many different platforms; from gallery walls, craft fairs, in project applications to their own websites.
With Catharine’s help and input 5 participants were able to find their own authentic voice and convey what lies behind their work, in their own words. Catharine’s skills as a writer and journalist, coupled with her skills as a ceramicist, means that she was able to bring a unique understanding of the challenge artists can face when asked to speak or write about their work.
To encourage the artists to develop their own authorship, Catharine will took an interactive workshop approach to Write About Craft. It was a co-writing project, where exchange took place over a mix of group and 121 sessions, feedback was given and the participants worked between the sessions. Each workshop included a range of written and verbal exercises that equipped participants with the skills needed to establish the story behind their statement and to write in an appropriate style for their diverse audiences.
To celebrate the end of this successful Craft Development project the artists will be hosting a celebration event and exhibition at Making Space on Thursday 5 December from 6.30-9pm. They will be exhibiting some of their work alongside a new personal statement. This event is open to friends, family and other makers, it is free to attend but we do ask that you reserve a space by clicking here.
