I thought it was about time that I did a post about Young Designers and shine a spotlight on some of the amazing work that’s come out of the first term and a half at Making Space.
Young Designers is a course for 11 – 16yr olds that want to learn about various creative industries including fashion, textiles, illustration, editorial, makeup, design and more. I launched my own creative brand Mia Mai in 2007 and I am sharing skills with the young designers as we work towards an end of term catwalk show and exhibition. Being at Making Space is amazing and we have access to some fantastic tools and equipment which means the group can try their hand at professional skills and techniques.
So, what have we been up to so far….? In term one we had a brief look at fashion illustration before starting a screen printed T-Shirt project. The girls came up with a design idea then learnt how to professionally screen-print a garment. In term two we tried something different again and the group got a chance to design and make their own wire and beaded jewellery and even got an opportunity to design a complimentary make up concept and pose for a photo-shoot modelling their creations.
Last term we had another look at printing but this time we experimented with Lino Printing. After creating an inspirational mood-board and thinking about design ideas the group designed and cut their own Lino stamp and set about transforming a range of plain white vests with repeat prints. Doing a fashion illustration of their final design and looking at designing a collection to compliment their garment completed this project. And that’s just a little taster of what we do, I’ve got lots of other ideas up my sleeves for the next few months…. Exciting!
We hope to continue running Young Designers throughout the year with 6 x 4 or 5 week blocks from September to July. In each block we will work on one big, or 2 smaller projects meaning participants can join at any stage and not be left out.
On the 18th July we will put on our end of term catwalk show and exhibition at Making Space which will showcase all the creations made since September. We will also have a small display at the Making Space Open Studios in May which will be a great teaser for what’s to come in July!
If you have a creative young person who you think would love to come join the Young Designers then you’re in luck as there’s still space this term! You can book online for the three upcoming terms by using the links below. We can have up to 12 young people in a session and have a mix of young people for 11 up to 15 so everyone is welcome. I can give more tuition time to newcomers and those more experienced students can complete more complex and higher level designs and work!
Young Designers takes place on a Tuesday evening from 5.30pm-7pm.
Don’t just take my word though, we asked a parent for their thoughts and here’s what they said…
“This course is so impressive! It encourages the designers to see all sides of the fashion industry, from magazines production, photography, making clothes and modelling their designs in a fashion show.
These days when everyone is body conscious it gives the designers the encouragement to be different and be proud to be themselves.”
For more information get in touch and please share with anyone you think might be interested.
We’d like to have as many young people as possible involved!
