a selection of silver rings made in a jewellery course

This 5/10 week beginners jewellery course, led by Sharon Justice, will introduce the workshop equipment, and how to use it and lay a foundation of basic knowledge and skills in metal work

This course can be booked in 5-week blocks, or you can save £70 by booking two 5-week blocks! (Discount applied in Shopping Cart)

Class Dates/Times

This course takes place on Tuesdays , 7pm-9pm, and on the following dates

Block 1: 16th April, 23rd April, 30th April, 14th May, 21st May

Block 2: 4th June, 11th June, 18th June, 25th June, 2nd July

What can you learn?

Students will learn how to measure, saw, shape, texture, solder, file, clean and polish.

What can you make?

Students will make a simple band ring, plain or textured, as well as either a simple pendant or a pair of earrings which involve wire and links.

What tools/equipment can you use?

Metal jewellery making requires use of open flame, either from our specially fitted mouthblown torches or from handheld gas canisters. Students will be shown how to use basic hand tools including saws, pliers, files, hammers, as well as soldering equipment and mechanical polishers.

What materials will I be given?

The beginning of the 5-week introductory course will provide an introductory pack which will include enough silver to complete a ring and one other small item of jewellery as well as saw blades, solder, and abrasives. If booking the second five weeks bezel wire, small findings, solder, saw blades, and other consumables will be available.  Larger amounts of silver will need to be purchased by the student.

What is the course structure?

The first 2-3 weeks of the course will be used to make a band ring with demonstrations on how to use the equipment and the skills required. We will then spend time using wire to complete some links and findings (ear wires, links) which will be used to complete a second project, again demonstrations will be given.

If booking the second block a ring with a simple setting will consolidate the techniques learned while adding the skill to set a cabochon stone.  A second project that is student designed will also include a stone. Again, demonstrations and support will be given to complete these pieces.

What is the recommended level of experience?

This course is ideal for those with no experience or who have maybe completed a short- one day course or have made in the past and feel they want to refresh their skills.
